Fort Mississauga
Location: Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON
Date: August 20, 2008
Construction of Fort Mississauga began in 1812 as part of a system of defence against American forces. This system of defence also included Fort George, Butler’s Barracks and Fort Erie. The fort was completed in 1814, and served as an emergency fortification. A tall, rectangular blockhouse stands in the centre of the fort. This structure was built from stone and bricks salvaged from the ruins of the town of Newark (Niagara-on-the-Lake), which the Americans burned to the ground during their retreat in 1813. British forces remained stationed at Fort Mississauga until 1855. The fort was subsequently used for summer training by Canadian forces during the 1870’s, both World Wars and the Korean War.
Since visitors are not permitted on the grounds of the fort past 9:00 pm, the PRI investigation of Fort Mississauga took place in the early evening of August 20, 2008 (concluding at about 9:00 pm). This investigation marked the second PRI visit to the fort. No evidence had been captured during our first visit to the fort. However, previous accounts of paranormal activity, coupled with its secluded location and public accessibility, made Fort Mississauga a desirable location at which to conduct a follow-up investigation.
Photographs, audio recordings and EMF measurements were taken throughout the grounds of the fort, with particular emphasis placed on the underground powder magazines and tunnel entrance. Additional EVP experiments were conducted in an effort to capture evidence from within the main blockhouse tower by placing a digital voice recorder on a window ledge, with the recorder's microphone aimed at the structure's interior.
Unfortunately, the PRI investigation of Fort Mississauga once again failed to yield any evidence of paranormal activity. As a result, we cannot conclude that Fort Mississauga is "haunted" at this time.
