Paranormal Field Surveys at Two Cemeteries

Location: Middlesex County, ON
Date: Sept 1, 2008 - March 9, 2009

This report presents a summary of paranormal field surveys conducted at two cemeteries located within Middlesex County (north of London Ontario) by the Paranormal Research Initiative (PRI). Sadly, both sites have been the centre of much vandalism. In an effort to prevent an increase in unlawful or disrespectful activity at the sites, they will simply be referred to as Cemetery 1 and Cemetery 2 herein.

Cemetery 1

Cemetery 1 was established in 1854, and has become a popular site for tourists and paranormal investigators alike due to its association with one of the most violent chapters in local history and reports of paranormal phenomena. Accounts of activity taking place at this cemetery range from "shadow people", to apparitions of riders and horses along the adjacent road, to strange formations of lights. It is possible (even likely) that many such accounts are simply urban legends and folklore. Additionally, numerous photographs of "strange mists" at Cemetery 2 can readily be found on the internet. However, most of these photographs can be easily "debunked" as light from a camera's flash reflecting off the breath of the photographer and/or subjects in the photograph.

Nevertheless, the history and tales of paranormal phenomena made Cemetery 1 an attractive location for PRI to visit. Our surveys of this cemetery consisted of three visits between September 1, 2008 and March 9, 2009. Each survey was primarily characterized by multiple EVP sessions and numerous photographs. Unfortunately, no audible or visual evidence of paranormal phenomena were captured during any of the surveys. Consequently, PRI cannot conclude that any paranormal activity takes place at Cemetery 1 at this time.

Cemetery 2

On March 9, 2009 (immediately following the third survey of Cemetery 1), PRI decided to conduct a brief survey at Cemetery 2. Cemetery 2 (established in 1823) is located north of London Ontario, and contains many tombstones of some of the earliest settlers in the area. We are unaware of any previous accounts of paranormal activity at this location.

Like the surveys at Cemetery 1, the investigation of this site consisted primarily of EVP sessions and photographs. No anomalies were caught in any of the photographs taken at the location. However, a possible EVP was discovered on one of the audio recordings taken in the southwest portion of the cemetery. Two investigators were present during the time of the recording. No other visitors to the cemetery were present, and both investigators were keeping all motions and noise to a minimum to avoid audio contamination during the recording.

The sound captured on the recording is quiet and muffled, making it difficult to discern possible words. Due to the low quality of this anomaly, we are very reluctant to draw the conclusion that its origin is paranormal. However, several attempts to recreate the noise on the audio recorder have been made to no avail, leaving us intrigued. It should also be noted that considerable traffic noise was present in the distance during the EVP recording sessions. However, the anomaly in question does sound to be much closer to the microphone, making it stand out from the background noise.

Given the lack of any other evidence yielded during the PRI survey, coupled with the low quality of the potential EVP recorded, we cannot conclude that paranormal activity has taken place at Cemetery 2. However, the capture of any audible anomaly during such a short visit to the site leaves us intrigued about the possibility of paranormal activity occurring within the cemetery, and we remain open to the possibility of returning to conduct further investigations.
